All thanks to them listening to American W. Edwards Demming when everyone else thought he was talking nonsense.

The TV quality story is explained in detail in the book “The Setmakers”. British manufacturers bought the cheapest components they could get and accepted that some would be faulty. Of course others would be out of tolerance or about to fail. The Japanese manufacturers were prepared to pay a premium for components but would make a big fuss and reject an entire batch if they found a single faulty one.
